Vodafone is to buy 140 Phones 4u stores in a move saving 887 jobs at the closure-threatened retailer.

The move came as 628 head office and telesales staff at the retailer have been made redundant as part of cuts announced by administrator PwC.

The firm, which provided mobile phone contracts on behalf of Vodafone and rival EE, went into administration on Sunday after the two firms said they would not be renewing their contracts.

Administrators from PricewaterhouseCoopers have been in talks with three parties over the potential sale of assets following the company's collapse.

Phones 4u employed hundreds of staff at shops across Scotland.
