A Bella Christmas from Salmond

SCOTLAND'S resident artistic polymath – the painter, writer, muralist and playwright Alasdair Gray – has unveiled his design for the First Minister's official Christmas Card for 2011.

Gray, whose seminal novel Lanark was published 30 years ago, has provided an image of Bella Caledonia, a personification of Scotland, for Alex Salmond, following Christmas cards designed in recent years by Jack Vettriano, Gerard Burns, John Lowrie Morrison and John Bellany.

The original painting of Bella Caledonia by Gray, who said he votes SNP, will be auctioned in the new year to benefit four Scottish charities, including the Children's Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS); Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCIAF); Glenachulish Preservation Trust and the Small Tribes Trust – a charity chosen by Gray.
