ANDY Murray faced some unexpected gatecrashers after taking his place in the US Open final, when his mother Judy Murray, Sir Sean Connery and Sir Alex Ferguson merrily rolled into a press conference in New York

The Scot, who faces his fifth Grand Slam final tonight, promptly told his mother "you smell of wine", before she blamed Ferguson for making her drink it.

The trio burst in just as the 25-year-old was explaining his feelings at one of the stranger victories of his career which saw play halted at Flushing Meadows by decidedly Scottish weather – torrential rain and a howling gale.

Connery said: "Excuse me for interrupting, but I just wanted to make a point. Where's Alex? I don't know where your mother is. Ah, there she is."Murray asked the actor if he was going to be around for the final, but Connery did not hear him and instead shouted: "Come on, Judy, Judy, Judy, Judy."In between bursts of laughter, Murray said to his mother: "You smell of wine."She then nodded at Ferguson and replied: "He made me have wine. He's just been telling me that Scotland invented the world."Ferguson then said: "Been coming here the last three years to New York, and I explained how Scotland invented the world; today we invented the wind."While Connery shouted: "Today they conquered the world!"As a bemused Murray looked on, Ferguson added: "Very good. Fantastic. Continue your interview - You know I don't talk to journalists."As the press conference resumed, Murray – who defeated Czech Tomas Berdych to secure his place in tonight's final, said: "It's great. It's obviously nice to have their support. Hopefully they'll be back for the final as well."The Dunblane-born sportsman, who was joined during centre court practice yesterday by actor Ken Spacey, will face defending champion Novak Djokovic in the deciding match in his fifth attempt at securing a Grand Slam title.Murray is believed to be in the best position as he has had a day-off in advance of the final, while Djokovic had to beat off rival David Ferrer yesterday. As Scotland again waits with bated breath to see if he can finally do it, locals in his home town of Dunblane have applied for extended opening hours to ensure punters get to see the final. Alan Duncan, landlord of the Dunblane Hotel, has had his opening hours extended to 1am. He said: "We'll be showing the final as always, but celebrations will depend on whether he wins or not. "I think the whole town will be in a celebratory mood if he wins. He's a credit to his community, he conducts himself very well and from speaking to the patrons of the bar, they're all extremely proud of him and wish him all the best."David Symon, manager of the Village Inn, added that the champagne was on ice as locals keep their fingers crossed for victory. He said: "We'll probably open some bottles of champagne. We've got some in the fridge so it's on ice, it all depends on what the outcome is."He's done really well, we will be showing the match on the big screen and we hope he wins."We'll be celebrating with strawberries and cream and champagne and getting the music pumping."
