BIGOTED, sectarian, a paedophile - these are just a handful of the insults used to abuse Garry Otton, founder of the Scottish Secular Society, on a daily basis.

Unfazed by the comments, Otton knows the abuse comes with the territory.

As well as fighting passionately for his secular views, Otton is a gay rights activist and author of Religious Fascism: The Repeal of Section 28.

The book looks at Scotland 14 years ago when the repeal of anti-gay law Section 28 was met by a Keep the Clause campaign.

Otton has been faced with his fair share of public spats, mainly over the internet or in the media, with people who disagree with him.

Just last week he was attacked by Jim Murphy over comments he made on the Secular Scotland website, referring to Murphy's Catholic background and support of denominational schools.

Murphy called for an end to comments on people's religion, and was joined by Reverend David Robertson of the Free Church of Scotland.

After Murphy's comments were reported, Otton received torrents of abuse.

"[David Robertson] quote-mined and pulled my comments out of context," he explained. "I got tweets about being a bigot from that."

Robertson says he did not take anything out of context, and stands by his comments that the remarks were bigoted and sectarian.

Along with the anti-secular comments, Otton receives homophobic abuse regularly too.

"I get it all the time on threads," he explained.

"They post things like the police should go round and check my computer."

Otton said he has contemplated phoning the police, but has resisted so far.
