Activists stand up for bridge

CAMPAIGNERS are trying to save a bridge where the first stand of the Jacobite 1745 uprising took place.

General Wade's High Bridge, near Spean Bridge village, Inverness-shire, is crumbling.

However, the middle columns of the structure, which crosses the River Spean, are intact.

Architects believe it could stay standing for decades.

The tale of the 12 Highlanders and a piper who stood firm against 85 Government foot soldiers has been credited with sparking support for the cause.
