The 65-year-old, who lives in Penicuik, near Edinburgh, includes Scottish, British, European and world titles among his competitive achievements.
Among the eighth Dan's top achievements were as a member of the World Championships-winning British team in 1975 as they became the first team to beat Japan. Mr Adam, who founded the Meadowbank Karate Group in 1970, based at the Meadowbank Sports Centre in Edinburgh, said: "It feels great; [I'm] very chuffed. I wasn't looking for any reward but it's nice."
He said he feels fortunate to have been able to make a profession of his hobby as director of sport for Scottish Karate and chairman of the Scottish Karate Federation.
He added: "It's been really, really good for me. I wouldn't change it for the world."
Former world super-featherweight champion boxer Alex Arthur, from Edinburgh, receives an MBE with the honour bestowed on the 33-year-old for his services to boxing. He also has a number of British, Commonwealth and European Boxing Union titles to his name.
Former Celtic footballer Paul Elliott, 48, receives a CBE for services to equality and diversity in football.
