MEMBERS of the Tartan Army enjoying alcohol before today's World Cup qualifier have been urged to drink responsibly and back their team.

Manager Craig Levein wants the fans to make the tie at Hampden Park a memorable occasion as his side aims to get off to a flying start in the campaign to reach Brazil in 2014.

Police have reminded fans it is an offence to drink in a public place in Glasgow and alcohol is banned from the stadium.

Levein said: "Hearing the roar of the crowd will give the boys a huge lift and I urge all fans to be safe, be responsible and get right behind the team."

Chief Superintendent Andy Bates of Strathclyde Police added: "As we start on the road to Brazil 2014, I would encourage supporters to come and cheer on the team and be part of the Hampden Roar, but when it comes to alcohol, please don't overdo it."

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill, who will attend the match, said: "The whole nation is behind Craig Levien.

"I'll be joining the thousands at Hampden to roar on the team, and I know that everyone across the country will want to wish them all the best.

"It'll be a tough test, but hopefully a victory will be the first step on the road to qualifying for the World Cup Finals in Brazil in 2014."

l The last remaining batch of 5000 tickets for the game will go on sale at official outlets around Hampden in the run-up to the kick-off at 3pm.
