Andy Murray wins first Grand Slam title with US triumph

Andy Murray claimed his first major title early today when he out-slugged Novak Djokovic in a five-set classic to take the US Open.

After a match lasting almost five hours, he became the first British winner of a Grand Slam men's singles title for 76 years, eventually triumphing 7-6 (12-10), 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2.

The success of the man from Dunblane came exactly 79 years to the day that Fred Perry also won the US Open. Perry was the last British men's singles champion three years later.
