An animal charity is appealing for information about a dog which was found stabbed to death.

The body of the dog was found on an industrial estate next to Beardmore Street in Clydebank on Sunday evening.

The tan-coloured male mastiff-cross-Irish Staffordshire bull terrier was stabbed nine times in the ribs, chest and neck, the Scottish SPCA said.

"This was an absolutely horrific attack and it is difficult to imagine the terror that was inflicted upon this dog," senior inspector Nicki Scott said.

"The dog was reported missing from his home in Caledonia Street that night and, understandably, his owners were shocked and devastated to learn he had been found, having been stabbed to death.

"We can't comprehend why anyone would do this to a defenceless animal and we urgently need to identify the person responsible for this barbaric crime.

"If anyone has any information at all, we are urging them to search their conscience and contact us as soon as possible."

Information can be reported anonymously to the Scottish SPCA animal helpline on 03000 999 999.
