Antarctic Bill passes in Lords

Tougher protection for Antarctica as a growing number of tourists visit the continent has been backed by peers.

The Antarctic Bill, which has already cleared the Commons, was given an unopposed second reading in the Lords.

The Bill lays down a duty to minimise the risk of an environmental emergency, such as a diesel spill from a grounded ship, by taking preventative measures and making contingency plans for a clean-up operation.
