A WOMAN was been subjected to a serious sexual assault in an Edinburgh street.

An investigation has been launched after the 37-year-old woman was attacked on Boxing Day by a man she had met earlier in the evening while out drinking in the city centre.

The pair drank together for a short time and then walked in Spring Gardens, where the assault happened.

Police are following a positive line of inquiry but appealed for information about the incident, which happened between 10.30pm and 11pm.

Detective Inspector Keith Fairbairn said: "The victim has been left extremely distressed by this attack and we are conducting various enquiries in Spring Gardens at this time.

"Anyone who remembers seeing anything suspicious in the area late on Boxing Day evening is asked to contact police immediately.

"In particular, we are keen to speak with a male and female couple who are believed to have passed the victim and suspect around the time of the incident."

l Meanwhile, an investigation has also been launched into the death of a man found seriously injured in a street in South Lanarkshire.

The 27-year-old was found in Fernslea Avenue, Blantyre, in the early hours of yesterday morning. He was taken to Hairmyres Hospital but later died.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out and police are treating the death as suspicious.

Detective Inspector Mark Bell, of Police Scotland's Major Investigation Team, said: "We are trying to establish the circumstances prior to the 27-year-old man being found injured.

"I'd like to speak to anyone who was in the vicinity of Fernslea Avenue prior to 2.30am this morning and may have witnessed a disturbance there."
