POLICE believe a missing hillwalker who vanished from his home in Edinurgh is in the Glen Nevis area after making an unscheduled trip without telling friends or family.

A car belonging to Alistair Porteous, 56, who was last seen at his home on Wednesday, has been found in a car park at the head of Glen Nevis.

Inquiries are under way to establish his whereabouts.

He was last seek at 2pm on Wednesday leaving his home at The Steils in the capital's Greenbank area.

Police in Fort William found Mr Porteous's Saab car on Saturday morning.

Local officers, mountain rescue teams and the RAF have since been deployed to search the surround area.

Anyone with information that can assist Police Scotland with their investigation is asked to come forward.

Mr Porteous is believed to have been wearing black waterproof trousers and jacket, a blue woolly hat and carrying a black and grey rucksack.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "We believe Mr Porteous may have taken an unscheduled trip to Fort William to walk the mountain trail at Glen Nevis.

"He is an avid and competent hillwalker. However, he did not tell family or friends where he was going and has yet to be traced.

"As such, we are growing increasingly concerned for his welfare.

"Anyone with information that can help us trace Mr Porteous is asked to contact police immediately."

It is the second major police search for a hillwalker this year.

Michael O'Grady, 64, from Irvinestown, Northern Ireland, vanished from the Ben Alder and Loch Ossian areas shortly before Christmas.

His body was found last month in the Corrour area, near Ben Alder.
