A TEENAGER who was locked up for three years after trying to incite a riot using Facebook has launched an appeal against his sentence.

Jordan McGinley, 18, posted messages on the social networking site urging people to loot shops and cause mayhem in Dundee city centre around the time of the English riots.

More than 2000 people viewed the page named "Riot In The Toon" and were invited to "kill some daftys" and attack police on August 17. They were also urged to bring guns.

McGinley and his co-accused Shawn Divin, 16, admitted charges of breach of the peace at Dundee Sheriff Court.

They were last week sentenced by Sheriff Elizabeth Munro to three years' detention each, while Divin received an extra 15 months for a breach of probation and the fact he committed the offence while on bail.

The pair did not create the page but agreed to be administrators. McGinley told police it was "meant to be a joke".

An appeal has been lodged on McGinley's behalf at the Court of Appeal in Edinburgh.

Sheriff Munro said the charges were the worst breaches of the peace she had dealt with.

No appeal has been lodged yet on behalf of Divin.
