The body of Alan James Easton was discovered in Everton, near Mansfield in Nottinghamshire, on February 2. It is believed he was murdered.
Mr Easton, who was originally from Bonhill, Dunbartonshire, had only recently moved to the Midlands and officers say they have still to identify his next of kin.
They are hoping to speak to anyone who knew him north of the Border.
Mr Easton, 50, is believed was a resident of the village of Conisborough, South Yorkshire, at the time of his death.
Three people have been charged with his murder.
