POLICE made a public appeal to help with the identification of a mystery man found wandering the streets of a town.

The elderly man, who has an English West Midlands accent and is thought to be from the region, was discovered wandering about Montrose in Angus with no clue as to his own identity two weeks ago.

Police have made extensive efforts to find out his name, but have been unsuccessful and have now made a public appeal in the hope someone who may know him will come forward.

The unidentified man was discovered in the town at around 3am on Friday, August 29. He has no idea of his name or recollection of where he is from.

He is thought to be a pensioner. He has shoulder-length grey hair and a long beard.

He is currently being cared for in hospital in the Tayside area.

Police have made widespread inquiries to ascertain his name and origins. It is unclear if they have liaised with colleagues in the West Midlands police force to check for any missing persons appeals.

A spokesman said: "He is currently being cared for in hospital in the Tayside area.

"Despite extensive enquiries the man's identity remains unknown and officers are appealing to anyone who may have information about him to come forward.

"Anyone who may know the man's identity or have seen him in the area is encouraged to contact Police Scotland on 101."
