Aristocrat in offer to islanders

Great Bernera, an island off the coast of Lewis once owned by a wealthy count who reputedly was the inspiration for James Bond, has been offered to its 230 islanders to keep.

Its owner, Count Robin Mirrlees, died in June last year, but now solicitors for his Germany-based grandson, Cyran le Lanne, have written to tell the islanders he does not wish to keep the island and they will get first refusal.
