TWO men have been arrested in connection with the death of pensioner James Simpson who was run over as he tried to stop someone taking his car from outside his home.

Strathclyde Police last night said the men, aged 26 and 32, were detained yesterday afternoon and are expected to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court today.

A full report will be sent to the procurator-fiscal.

The arrests came after as many as 60 motorists were stopped and questioned by police on Tuesday night as officers stepped up the investigation into the death of the 76-year-old, who died outside his home in Ashgill, South Lanarkshire, on Wednesday, November 30.

Mr Simpson was at home with his wife on the even- ing before he was knocked down and killed with his own vehicle.

Officers also staged a reconstruction of the events surrounding his death. A black Land Rover Discovery similar to Mr Simpson's was driven along the route from his home.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police yesterday said drivers of 58 vehicles had been stopped in Ashgill, Netherburn and Crossford – the village where the vehicle was later found abandoned.

The spokeswoman said: "Officers are very encouraged by information which was obtained. The inquiry team is working on some significant lines of inquiry."
