A glimpse from inside one of the main architectural features of the new £50 million Glasgow School of Art building shows work is rapidly progressing.

The three "driven voids of light" are cylindrical structures that will allow natural light to permeate through the new building.

The concrete shafts are now clearly visible at the construction site at the Garnethill campus, which is being worked on by main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine.

The building has been designed by American architect Steven Holl in partnership with JM Architecture of Glasgow.

Work on the new Glasgow School of Art Garnethill campus building is still in phase one of the development and the building is due to open in 2013.

The project has now reached ground level, with construction of some of the lower floors of the new building almost complete.

As well as studio space, the new building will contain a lecture theatre and exhibition space.

It will face the famous Grade-A listed Charles Rennie Mackintosh-designed art school building on Renfrew Street.
