Artworks donation to galleries

PUBLIC galleries in Glasgow and Edinburgh have benefited from a £4 million donation of works from two of the UK's leading art collectors.

The Eric and Jean Cass Gift involves more than 300 pieces. The Contemporary Art Society said the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh are among the UK galleries to benefit from "one of the most important philanthropic initiatives in the 100-year history of the (society)".

The donation includes works by Niki de Saint Phalle, Reg Butler and Cesar Baldaccini. The couple want the works to be "enjoyed by art lovers across the UK as a whole rather than just by visitors to top London museums", the society said.
