A RUGBY player has been named in a Scotland Club XV along with one of four internationalists accused of assaulting him in a kebab shop.

Glasgow Hawks star Ally Maclay has not played since suffering a broken eye socket in the alleged late-night attack in Glasgow's west end in October.

The utility back's call-up to the squad comprising the best club rugby players north of the Border may see him line up alongside Scotland sevens player Rory Hughes. He has been charged in connection with the incident.

Test players Ryan Wilson, Ryan Grant and Sean Maitland are also subject of a report to the Crown.

Scotland flanker Wilson appeared in private on two assault charges at Glasgow Sheriff Court last week. He made no plea or declaration and was granted bail by Sheriff Ian Miller.

Hughes - who plays for Stirling County - Maitland and Grant are due to appear in the near future.

A Scottish Rugby spokesman indicated the decision to name Maclay and Hughes in the same squad was due to the fact head coach Phil Leck and his assistants are focusing on on-field matters.

He said: "The coaches have chosen the players they believe are the most appropriate for the matches on the schedule."

Head coach Phil Leck said: "We have started to plan earlier than we did last year. Running the club international programme can be difficult at times with players committed to jobs and playing in the Premiership and British & Irish Cup. We have selected an initial squad that we can bring together and work on a game plan with and then, as we train and play, we can look at who put their hand up.

"I think we managed to create a quick and exciting style of rugby that was attractive to watch last season. I'm keen to develop that again."

As well as a weekly training session, the side will play a trial game on January 6.

This will be followed by a warm-up against Scotland under-20 on January 22.

The official fixtures will be played on February 7 against Ireland in Cork and then a month later at Old Anniesland, against France Federale.

Last week, the Crown Office confirmed the procurator-fiscal had received a report relating to an incident involving one man aged 20, one aged 25 and another aged 28 on October 27. A spokesman said then the matter remains under consideration.
