A VICIOUS gang attack on a young man in Glasgow is being treated as attempted murder.

The victim, 22, was stabbed in a "disgusting, unprovoked attack" in a residential area of Baillieston.

He was heading to a friend's house after a night out in Glasgow City Centre and had been dropped off by a black taxi on Easterhouse Road, near Swinton.

As he was walking into a lane, between Easterhouse Road and Springcroft Gardens, he was approached by a gang of about six men.

The group – who were all dressed in black – stabbed the victim, before making off in an unknown direction.

Police said the man managed to make his way into Springcroft Gardens, where he raised the alarm.

The attack took place at around 3.15am on Saturday.

The victim was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, His condition was described as serious but stable.

Detective Sergeant Kenny McCartney, who is lead- ing the inquiry, said: "This was a disgusting, unprovoked attack on a young man who was simply making his way to a friend's house after a night out in Glasgow City Centre.

"Our inquiries are at an early stage and as yet we have been unable to speak to the victim due to the severity of his injuries.

"We are undertaking extensive inquiries into the incident, and I would like to reassure the local community that we are doing everything we can to trace the men responsible."

Police are now trying to trace the driver of the black hackney taxi that dropped off the victim.

The attackers are described as being aged between late teens and early 20s.
