AN MP had rocks and tomatoes hurled at him as he was ambushed by around 50 "violent thugs" ahead of a talk on squatting.

Mike Weatherley, Tory MP for Hove in East Sussex, had to seek refuge in a room as shouting protesters gathered at the University of Sussex near Brighton.

He had been invited to talk about changing the law to criminalise squatting, but before the debate started, a mob surrounded him and threatened him.

Security officials barricaded him and his staff in a room until the police arrived to take him away.

Mr Weatherley said: "It's outrageous that a peaceful event should be hijacked by a group of violent thugs."

Mr Weatherley has been campaigning for squatting to be criminalised since he was elected in 2010.
