The Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, received a warm reception last night when she read from her works at a special event in Glasgow to celebrate this week’s opening of the city’s annual Aye Write!

literary festival.

Ms Duffy appeared with musician John Sansom at the Mitchell Theatre and said afterwards it had been an intense night in front of a very engaged and receptive audience.

“They were very much concentrating,” she said. Ms Duffy read from last year’s New Collected Poems, Love Poems, which was published this year, and her earlier work Rapture.

Sansom provided musical interludes on a series of archaic pipes.

Ms Duffy was born in Glasgow in 1955 and, she said, frequently returns to visit relatives.

The show, which preceded the official launch of the festival on Friday, was sold out, and long queues formed for a book signing session afterwards.

The Aye Write! Book Festival has The Herald and Times group as its official media partner.
