Back to barracks

PART of Edinburgh's Central Library has undergone a remarkable transformation into a First World War barracks, complete with mock images of barbed wire and sandbags.

Examples of real ammunition, a soldier's helmet and other artefacts from the Great War are also on display.

Yvonne McEwen, project director of Edinburgh War, put the finishing touches to the WW1 History Hub, which opened yesterday, and aims to collate information on the history of Scotland's contribution to the 1914-18 conflict that cost 16 million lives, including more than 140,000 Scots. People will be invited to look around and share their stories.
