NEW Doctor Who Peter Capaldi's outfit has been revealed, with Doc Martens and a Crombie now in vogue in the Tardis.

The Scots-born actor, who took from Matt Smith as the 12th incarnation of the time traveller on Christmas Day last year, is to sport a dark blue coat, trousers, a white shirt and the black bovver boys-style boots.

Mr Capaldi said it had "woven the future from the cloth of the past: simple, stark, and back to basics".

He added: "No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100% rebel time lord."

His predecessor was well known for wearing Harris Tweed jackets, while past actors to have played the part include Tom Baker, who sported a multi-coloured scarf.

Dr Who boss Steven Moffat said the new era meant a new outfit. He said: "Monsters of the universe, the vacation is over: Capaldi is suited and booted and coming to get you."

Filming for episode one of series eight began earlier this month, after 10.2 million tuned-in on Christmas Day to get their first much-anticipated glimpse of Mr Capaldi's Doctor.

Charlotte Moore, controller of BBC One, said: "Peter Capaldi's Doctor is officially recorded in history with the unveiling of his new costume. It's sharp, smart and stylish: the 12th time lord means business."
