Fears emerged after the planned tie-up between BAE Systems and its European rival EADS was called off, with Germany being blamed for the breakdown of negotiations.
Former Labour Defence Secretary Lord Reid of Cardowan blamed a "failure of politics" and his party called on the UK Government to hold urgent talks on the future of the defence industry.
