A 15-year regeneration plan for Calton – a key gateway to Commonwealth Games venues in the east end – was approved by the city council yesterday.
The scheme focuses on an area bordered by Duke Street in the north and Glasgow Green in the south, Glasgow Cross in the west and Abercromby Street in the east. It provides guidelines on the development of vacant land, the re-use of key buildings and the improvement of streets and open spaces.
It is hoped the result will be an attractive area with a vibrant Barras Market at its heart.
A Glasgow City Council report said the world-famous market could operate seven days a week, instead of just weekends.
To kickstart the project, councillors are to be asked to provide cash for a five-year programme to attract businesses and jobs.
