COUNTLESS romances have blossomed on the dance floor of the Glasgow Barrowland Ballroom, but couples could be soon be tying the knot there.

An application has been lodged by city chiefs for a licence to hold civil wedding ceremonies.

If successful, brides and grooms will be allowed have their nuptials at the place where may have gone on their first date or met at gigs.

It became a possibility after writer Nuala Naughton, who has penned a book called Barrowland: A Glasgow Experience, suggested it to Barras manager Tom Joyes.

She said: "I was writing the book and the deadline was brought forward, which meant I had to postpone my wedding as there was too much to do. I asked Tom to write a foreword and in his last line he said he was going to apply for licence so I could get married there. I thought it was the most rock'n'roll place anyone could get married."

Manager Tom Joyes said: "We thought it was a great idea."

A decision on the plan will be taken next month.
