Bars face fines for Mother’s Day wine

Bar bosses, restaurateurs and hoteliers have been running the risk of £20,000 fines or six months imprisonment – for offering free glasses of champagne on Mother’s Day.

Over-zealous officials at West Dunbartonshire Council instructed a number of venues to remove the offer of free champagne last Sunday, claiming it was an inducement to drink and in breach of new liquor laws.

Among the venues was the five-star Cameron House Hotel.
