George Entwistle became director-general on Monday, despite heavy criticism of his role in overseeing the BBC's television coverage of June's Thames Pageant to mark the Queen's 60 years on the throne.
The corporation was accused of dumbing down the reporting of the spectacular event, which featured more than 1000 boats but took place in heavy rain. Thousands of viewers complained about factual errors and "inane" commentary.
Mr Entwistle said: "We were genuinely thrown out of our stride by the weather."
