The BBC has confirmed it has made further cuts to the number of senior managers it employs, a day after Culture Secretary Sajid Javid said it had to become more efficient.

The minister told the Royal Television Society that he supported the corporation's efforts to make savings, but added: "I believe more can and must be done to make the BBC more efficient."

Figures released by the BBC today show that in 12 months up to August it cut the number of senior managers by 5.7% and trimmed 5.4% off the pay bill.

The BBC said that since August 2009 it had reduced senior manager headcount by 230 people from 640 to 410 and taken £27.4 million off the senior manager pay bill.

A BBC spokesman said: "Since August 2009 the BBC has reduced senior manager headcount and pay bill by over a third. We'll keep driving down costs whilst making sure we have the right people in the right jobs and are giving audiences the best programmes and services."
