BBC Scotland has promised viewers it will pick up the baton at the Commonwealth Games where its outstanding coverage of the Olympics left off.

Director Ken MacQuarrie said the sporting event would be beamed around the world from 15 separate TV streams and 17 locations in Glasgow after it begins on July 23, 2014.

Mr MacQuarrie made his comments as he delivered the Royal Television Society's Campbell Swinton Lecture in Glasgow: "In many ways, the Games came of age in a digital world, defined to a large extent by the BBC's approach to the coverage. We will adopt a similar approach to the Commonwealth Games."

In the run up to the independence vote in September 2014, Mr MacQuarrie pledged the corporation would "report on every twist and turn of the debate".

However, he stressed the importance of BBC Scotland remaining neutral.

"For the BBC to take – or to be seen to take – any kind of stance on a constitutional issue would damage our reputation for impartial reporting," he said.
