The first annual National Wellbeing Study, championed by the Prime Minister David Cameron, found those in Scotland and Northern Ireland are generally happier than their counterparts in England and Wales.
It found almost 83% of people who took part from Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland reported high levels of satisfaction with their lives, making them the happiest region in the country.
