A DEMONSTRATION against the bedroom tax will go ahead in Glasgow despite problems obtaining approval for the protest march because two other marches had already been approved for the same day.

The organisers are now planning to hold a gathering in George Square at noon on June 1, having so far failed to reach an agreement with Glasgow City Council for a demonstration that was expected to attract up to 8000 people.

The All Scotland Anti Bedroom Tax Federation had planned to make their protest with a demonstration in Glasgow starting at 11am.

But after it emerged there were two other marches planned within the space of five hours on the same day, Glasgow City Council suggested other times for the Bedroom Tax march that organisers found unsuitable.

Organisers had told the council that if a demonstration was prohibited they intended to hold a static protest in George Square.

A Glasgow City Council report says that after various alternative times were rejected, police took the view that the march "cannot take place in this format, nor on the day requested" and that a modified parade on a different day would be the safest solution.
