YOU wait years for one Hollywood star to show up, and then two turn up at once.

Halle Berry arrived in Glasgow yesterday to shoot scenes for her latest film, hot on the heels of Brad Pitt’s appearance in the city

The Oscar-winning star was spotted in Douglas Street, near the city centre, in a specially fenced-off section which will double for the hills of San Francisco for the next few days.

She is filming a segment of the £62 million blockbuster Cloud Atlas, which will also star Tom Hanks, Hugh Grant and James McAvoy, although only Berry is expected to appear in Scotland.

The part of the film being shot was set in the 1970s, and the star was decked out to look the part in flared jeans, a leather jacket and a long knitted scarf. She was filmed running down the street and jumping over a car’s bonnet -- although the scene was tried out by a stunt double first.

Last night, artists were decorating walls in the background with a colourful graffiti mural, while vintage 1970s cars were parked nearby.

Glaswegians should be getting used to their city standing in for America, after a massive outdoor film set for Pitt’s zombie epic World War Z transformed the streets surrounding George Square into Philadelphia last month.

The arrival of two of Tinseltown’s biggest stars to film in the city has been welcomed by council bosses -- with World War Z reputed to have boosted Glasgow’s economy by more than £2 million. The Glasgow Film Office, which has played an integral part in attracting the two productions to Scotland, is hoping that Cloud Atlas brings a similar dividend.

Although the set for Cloud Atlas is much smaller than that created for World War Z, workers in nearby offices were again greeted by the sight of US-style street signs and cars replacing the familiar Scottish ones.

Jeanette McKee, who works in the nearby Barclays building, had a bird’s eye view of the action from the window of her workplace on the second floor.

She said: “I’ve been watching them set up all day and it’s been very exciting. One minute the street signs were all Scottish, the next they were all American.

“I saw Halle Berry when she arrived on set and she was just lovely -- even from far away you can see how beautiful she is. She’s a real star.”

Another office employee, who perhaps understandably didn’t want to reveal his name, admitted that not much work had been done during the day.

He said: “Even when there’s not been much going on in the street, people have been getting up and going to the window every two or three minutes to check what’s going on. It’s not been our most productive day, that’s for sure.”

Cloud Atlas, based on the best-selling book by David Mitchell, is being directed by the Wachowski brothers, who also brought the Matrix trilogy to the big screen.

The epic plot, which was initially considered unfilmable, is made up of six linked stories which follow a soul from the 19th century to a post-apocalyptic future.

The majority of Berry’s Glasgow scenes will be filmed today and tomorrow, with one crew member saying that much more is yet to come.

Vintage Beetle cars have been unloaded in the area, while trucks and dressing rooms have also arrived on Brunswick Street in Merchant City. The city’s Montrose Street and locations around Strathclyde University will also be used.

Other scenes are being filmed on Monday and then again from Sunday, September 25, until Tuesday, September 27 -- and the public has been advised that roads in the city will be closed.

However, the arrival of a second Hollywood blockbuster in Glasgow is not being met with a warm welcome everywhere.

Eagle Couriers boss Jerry Stewart said gridlocked streets during shooting of World War Z in the city were “hugely problematic” for the business.
