The establishment of a new youth orchestra in the Govanhill area of Glasgow has been given the green light.

The executive committee of Glasgow City Council voted in favour of setting up a Big Noise orchestra, based on the same intense classical music tuition methods as those taught to the children of the Big Noise project in Raploch, Stirling.

Lyn Ewing, chairwoman of Govanhill Community Development Trust, said: "This is an exciting day for us."

If the plans come to fruition, by 2015/16 more than 700 children in the south side of the city could be playing in a full symphonic orchestra
