Birds of prey targeted as poisonings hit record high

REPORTS of animal poisoning have soared to their highest level in more than a decade and more than 100 birds of prey and animals were killed by pesticides last year, it has been revealed.

Birds of prey, wild mammals, livestock and pet dogs and cats were all found to be victims of accidental or deliberate poisonings last year, according to Scotland’s Wildlife Incident Investigation Scheme (WIIS).

It recorded 233 suspected poisoning incidents last year, one-third more than the 166 recorded the previous year and the highest figure since recent records began in 1997. However, only 32 incidents were recorded as abuse, rather than accidental exposure, a slight reduction on the previous year.
