Blow for film festival after major backer pulls funding

The troubled Edinburgh International Film Festival has suffered another blow after the UK's leading film body, the British Film Institute, said it could no longer fund the event.

It comes after the 65th anniversary festival in June went ahead with a reduced budget, fewer films and no “red carpet” events.

The British Film Institute (BFI) has recently become the lead body for film funding and support in the UK, after the dismantling of the old UK Film Council (UKFC). It has inherited the council’s core functions, including the distribution of National Lottery funding.
