POLICE forensic teams are scouring the car park of one of Scotland's busiest hospitals after the body of a man was found in bushes.

The body was discovered in bushes near a car park at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at 2.45pm yesterday.

Police say the man had suffered a number of injuries and his death is being treated as suspicious.

Investigations so far suggest the man was one of a group of four men, possibly of Eastern European origin, who got off a bus on Old Dalkeith Road on Friday night.

The hospital houses Scotland's busiest accident and emergency department.

A large section of the car park was cordoned off as forensic officers moved in.

Police Scotland said investigations were still at an early stage and they are now keen to trace anyone who may have been in the area and seen the group at around 10pm on Friday, April 5.

A blue-and-white tent was erected at a spot in the car park where it is believed the body was discovered.

Police said they were still working to establish the man's identity.

Detective Chief Inspector David McLaren from the Specialist Crime Division, East said: "We are appealing for anyone who may have any information regarding this man's death to come forward.

"We are working to establish how this man came by his injuries, and we would be keen to hear from anyone who might have seen the group of men on Old Dalkeith Road on Friday night, and who might have some valuable information regarding this inquiry.

"Furthermore, we would ask anyone who might have any information that could help identify the man, to contact us on 101."

A police spokesman said: "An investigation is under way after a body of man was discovered in bushes in a car park at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. The car park has been closed off at the moment to allow inquiries to take place at the scene."

The £190 million acute teaching hospital was opened 10 years ago as a purpose-built replacement for the old and outdated Victorian building at Lauriston Place, and has more than 900 inpatient beds.

The infirmary also houses the country's largest maternity unit, and is home to the Scottish Liver Transplant Unit.
