POLICE searching for a missing Scottish girl have found the body of a young woman on a beach.

Sofie Neill, 16, who was known for her distinctive blue hair, was last seen at 5pm on Wednesday as she walked down the A921 from Dalgety Bay to Inverkeithing in Fife.

Police launched a search for the young woman and combed the surrounding area all day yesterday.

The body was found in the Braefoot Bay, the site of a major gas tanker terminal between St David's and Aberdour, near Dalgety Bay.

Detective Inspector Graham Seath, who is in charge of the investigation, said: "There do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances, however our inquiries are at an early stage and the body has still to be formally identified."

Earlier, police had expressed their concern for the safety of Sofie, of Dalgety Bay. The heavy metal fan, who also wears a blue stud under her lower lip, is not thought to have gone missing before.

Police Scotland prepared a missing persons poster which was distributed via Facebook and the internet after she vanished.

Comedian Frankie Boyle had taken notice of the search and repeated a police appeal for information to his thousands of followers on Twitter. Sofie's family were said to have been "very concerned" about her after she vanished.

Police said no further details would be released until formal identification had taken place.
