Bomb found in Northern Ireland could have caused carnage

POLITICIANS in Northern Ireland yesterday said a 500lb bomb, which was placed in a van under the main Belfast to Dublin road near Newry, could have caused an Omagh-style massacre.

Detectives say the bomb, found at an underpass near the border, may have been set for a town centre attack.

In August 1998, 29 people were killed and 220 were injured in a republican bomb attack in the centre of Omagh, Co Tyrone.
