A 14-year-old boy has been arrested over an alleged racist attack on two Muslim women.

It is alleged he shouted abuse at the women and tried to remove their headscarves in the Wester Hailes area of Edinburgh on Thursday, police said.

Officers appealed to the public to identify those involved and a 14-year-old boy was charged over the incident today. A report is to be sent to the procurator fiscal.

Inspector Stevie Dolan said: "I would like to thank the local community who responded to our appeal and gave us the information we required to detect this alleged offence.

"It is thanks to the information they provided that we have been able to arrest and charge someone, and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

"Police Scotland is committed to keeping people safe and crime in any form will not be tolerated. We appeal to all of our communities to report any incidences of hate crime to allow us to respond quickly and effectively.

"Increased patrols will be out across the holiday weekend to offer reassurance to the community, engage with local youths and deter further criminal activity."
