Boy's compensation battle after father's death in helicopter crash

The son of one of 16 oil workers killed in a North Sea helicopter crash in April 2009 is locked in a court battle for compensation over his father's death.

Joel Taylor, 15, was awarded an undisclosed sum of cash after his father Leslie Taylor, 41, died in the Super Puma accident.

All 14 offshore workers and the two pilots on board died when the Bond-operated aircraft crashed into the sea off Fraserburgh.

Relatives of the men lodged compensation claims and Joel was the last family member to settle for damages, but his legal team claims the amount he was offered was too low and a writ has now been served at the Court of Session in Edinburgh.Leslie Taylor, of Kintore, had battled flying nerves to work offshore and provide for his family. His daughter Brogan Taylor previously told how officials had failed to inform her or her brother that their father had been on board the aircraft in the hours following his death.Mr Taylor had remarried two years before his death and his two children had been living in Aberdeen with their mother.Student Brogan, 18, said the family only found out because one of her father's friends called her mother, June, to let her know.Grief-stricken Brogan said her brother Joel, who was 12 at the time, "lost his hero" when his father died.She said at the time: "Dad was the friendliest person you could ever meet. He would get along with everyone. He was just a very kind, loving person. I loved him and looked up to him, but he is my brother's hero."Joel's legal team are seeking damages from Super Puma operators Bond Offshore and KCA Deutag.George Clark, of Quantum Claims, who is dealing with the case, said: "This is about trying to bring closure for a little boy who has lost his father in a tragic accident and the actions of the defenders are not assisting that process."
