A free event featuring 12 Scottish brass bands is to be part of this year's Edinburgh International Festival.

The festival (EIF) has launched Fanfare, which will take place on August 23 on the Water of Leith.

The bands will play music by Mahler, Elgar, Burns as well as more modern music by Kraftwerk, Joy Division and Disney tunes.

The bands will perform three different repertoires at 12pm, 3pm and 5pm, in 12 different locations along the Water of Leith Walkway.

The bands will play the same repertoire at the same time so that audiences along the Walkway will share the joy and passion of the live brass band in a coordinated community experience.

The brass bands is another new development of the festival's music programme by new director Fergus Linehan.

Fanfare was inspired by the performances of one of the Festival's main music theatre pieces, En avant, marche!, at the King's Theatre on 24 and 25 August, which will feature a local Scottish brass band alongside Belgian contemporary dance collective Les ballets C de la B.

Linehan said: "The festival has been entertaining Edinburgh audiences since 1947, taking over the city centre's grand established theatre venues and concert halls.

"Fanfare is an opportunity for us to further explore this beautiful city, using its natural landscapes and share the Festival experience with a wider audience".

Sally Hobson, the EIF's head of creative learning said: "Settled within the many natural amphitheatres along the Waters of Leith, Fanfare offers a genuine opportunity for audiences to engage collectively with an eclectic range of music at several points throughout the day.

"Knowing that many people along the route from Balerno to Leith will be listening to same music will add a real sense of city-wide community involvement."
