A MAN appeared in court yesterday charged with a breach of the peace in Scotland's capital, a move which followed the death of a young man in a shooting.

Mohammed Abdi, 25, died in hospital after he was gunned down in the Willowbrae area of Edinburgh early on Sunday.

Following the death, it emerged that Mr Abdi, a security guard and student at Telford College, had appeared in court on drugs charges earlier this month.

Yesterday, Mohamud Mohamud, 29, from London, appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court facing a charge of breach of the peace.

Detectives are trying to trace up to 10 people believed to be involved in the attack on Mr Abdi that left another man hurt.

Mr Mohamud made no plea or declaration during the private hearing and was remanded in custody.

A massive inquiry has been launched by Police Scotland which has also spread to the West Midlands, where there have been reports that the men involved were connected to Somali gang crime in Birmingham.

There was also a claim that Mr Abdi – who reportedly owed money – may have been targeted after drug dealers thought he had spoken to police.

A gangland source said he had "strong family and tribal links in the city (Birmingham) and used to make regular visits".

He is the son of a Muslim cleric linked to the Central Edinburgh mosque, Omar Abdi, who made an emotional plea for help as he spoke of his "much-loved son".

Earlier this month, police were alleged to have found a "significant quantity" of crack cocaine and cash at properties in Edinburgh.

Residents also said a gang had laid siege before and after the shooting to a house that Mr Abdi, from Leith, may have been staying at.

They said hooded men smashed windows at the property in Gracemount.
