SOMETIMES technical glitches will force even the most professional broadcaster to despair.

BBC Scotland's Sally Magnusson literally threw up her hands in frustration as the lunchtime news bulletin came close to chaos yesterday.

BBC Scotland was forced to apologise last night after admitting to "a number of technical problems" during the programme.

It started with a failed link to the golf correspondent at the Open at Muirfield, followed by a pre-recorded report about the artist Ken Currie which did not want to start.

Magnusson tried to move on to another story but Currie's picture then appeared on screen, causing the presenter to fold her arms and tell viewers: "Oh, it's a wee bit of a dog's breakfast – I do apologise."

As she waited to discover how to proceed, she told viewers: "They're having a little argument," referring to her producers.

While she may have been more than relieved to reach the end of the show, she then appeared to fluff her lines, causing her to throw up her hands and let out a yell.

One BBC insider said: "Sally did a great job, considering, but it was pretty chaotic."

The source said technical failures were exacerbated by having "too few staff" in production, due to the recent and ongoing cuts in staffing at the broadcaster.

The troubled bulletin caused a stir on Twitter yesterday. James Christie said: "Sally Magnusson just showed why it's useful to have an experienced anchor when the news disintegrates into technical chaos".

Thomas Cunningham said: "It was car crash television."
