AN award-winning Scottish artist, Roderick Buchanan, is to be the first artist in residence at one of Scotland's most prestigious addresses.

Buchanan will become the artist in residence in Edinburgh's Charlotte Square, in a new initiative organised by the Edinburgh College of Art (ECA), and 19 properties in the Georgian square called The Charlotte Square Collection.

Buchanan will lead a group of students in creating work inspired by the elegant square in the capital's New Town.

In 2000 Buchanan, who studied at Glasgow School of Art, won the inaugural Beck's Futures prize for his work Gobstopper, a film depicting children trying to hold their breath while being driven through the Clyde Tunnel and in 2004 he won a Paul Hamlyn Award.

Buchanan will have an exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art next year. He said: "What a wonderful opportunity to work in Edinburgh between a fantastic art school and a world heritage site."
