CONSTRUCTION work on a multi-million-pound office development earmarked as a new Police Scotland headquarters has officially started after a ceremonial sod cutting by Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

Although unconfirmed, the £24 million development on the banks of the Clyde in Glasgow's east end is expected to replace the former Strathclyde Police base in the city's Pitt Street.

A decision to shut Pitt Street and move departments and personnel to the new Dalmarnock site is expected to be confirmed by the new Scottish Police Authority in a few weeks.

The Scottish Government has agreed to foot most of the bill by contributing £16m towards the building costs.

Clyde Gateway, the publicly owned regeneration company behind the plans, would only say it was "confident of securing a significant inward investor".

Ms Sturgeon said the new office would safeguard 300 construction jobs.

Once completed, the new development will provide 120,000 sq ft of accommodation for 900 staff, along with 200 car parking spaces.

Ms Sturgeon said: "Clyde Gateway is doing a fantastic job progressing this project, helping to ensure the successful impact of the Commonwealth Games and its legacy for Glasgow's east end."
