Buildings boost for art groups ahead of Games

Two of Scotland's national arts companies, Scottish Opera and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, are to be based in radically revamped homes after receiving £11 million in new funding.

Both companies will redevelop their Glasgow headquarters in time for the Commonwealth Games in 2014, with Scottish Opera upgrading its Theatre Royal venue and the RSNO moving into a new building next to Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

The Theatre Royal will be redeveloped with £4m from the Scottish Government, with improved front of house areas as well as disabled access.The RSNO’s £7m funding from the Government will go towards the long-mooted extension to the GRCH, which will include rehearsal space as well as a 600-seat venue.The new RSNO building will also contain administrative offices, practice rooms and an education facility, with Glasgow City Council also contributing to the project.Redevelopment of the A- listed Theatre Royal will include a new foyer, a new bar areas, lifts and toilets. Culture secretary Fiona Hyslop said: “The venues will play a crucial role in showcasing Scotland’s world-renowned culture and creativity during the Commonwealth Games, as well as enhancing the cultural life of Glasgow for years to come.”
