COUNCIL chiefs have been urged to toughen up on staff absence after it emerged workers at one authority took 53,000 days off sick in a year.
West Dunbartonshire Council staff took an average of 11 days off each in the last financial year, with most claiming reasons like stress-related back pain. The figure is up on 2010/11 when the council's 4800 staff took an average of 10 days each.
